1. Is it easy to drive in the Algarve?

Yes — driving in the Algarve is generally stress-free. Roads are well-maintained, signage is clear, and distances are short. Most tourist attractions are best reached by car.

2. What kind of car should I rent?

A small to mid-size car is ideal for the Algarve — especially if you're planning to park in towns or beach areas. If you're travelling with family or lots of luggage, consider a compact SUV or estate.

3. Do I need a car to explore the Algarve?

Absolutely. While public transport connects the main towns, many of the most beautiful beaches, scenic viewpoints and hidden gems are only accessible by car.

4. Is parking a problem?

Not usually. Most towns have paid and free parking. In summer, beach parking can fill up quickly, so arriving early is advised. Many rural spots have easy, free parking.

5. What are the driving rules I should know?

- Drive on the right-hand side of the road
- Seat belts are mandatory
- Speed limits are: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on rural roads, 120 km/h on highways
- Don’t use your phone while driving unless you have a hands-free system

6. How long does it take to cross the Algarve?

From Vila Real de Santo António (East) to Sagres (West) takes around 2 hours on the motorway, or 3 hours along the scenic coastal route.
